Mini-split repair vs. replace: how to make the right call

Your mini-split just stopped cooling on a July afternoon in Sarasota, the technician is standing in your living room, and you have maybe ten minutes to decide whether to repair or replace. That is a terrible position to be in without a framework, so here is one you can actually use.

The repair-vs.-replace question is not just about the cost of today's fix. It is about the age of the unit, the nature of the failure, what the next failure is likely to cost, how efficient the system is compared to what you could buy today, and how much of your home's comfort depends on that single unit. Work through those five lenses and the right answer almost always becomes obvious.

Start with the unit's age

Mini-splits in Florida typically last 15 to 20 years when they are properly maintained and installed, though the salt air near Anna Maria Island, Casey Key, and the Bayshore Gardens waterfront can shorten that lifespan if the outdoor unit is never cleaned or coated. A system that is 12 or fewer years old with no history of compressor problems is almost always worth repairing, provided the repair itself is not enormous.   • Capacitor or contactor. These are inexpensive parts that wear out predictably. A capacitor failure on a 10-year-old unit is not alarming - it is routine. Repair it without hesitation.
  • Control board or inverter board. Pricier but still reasonable to replace on a unit that is 10 years old or younger, especially on a mid-range or premium brand.

  • Compressor failure. This is the big one. The compressor is the heart of the system and often costs more to replace than the unit is worth, especially once you add labor.

Compressor failure on a unit under warranty is a different story - parts costs may be covered - but for that to work, the warranty has to be intact. Apply the 50 percent rule - carefully

Factor in efficiency honestly

Mini-split efficiency has improved significantly over the past decade. If you are running a system with a SEER rating in the low teens, replacing it with a modern high-efficiency unit could meaningfully reduce your electricity bill every month for the next 15 years.   • The unit is under 10 years old and has had no major repairs previously.
  • The failed component is minor (capacitor, relay, sensor, drain pump).
  • The repair cost is under 30 percent of a comparable new installation.
  • The unit is a higher-efficiency model that would be costly to match today.
  • You have an active manufacturer's warranty that covers the parts.
